• The American Association of Pediatrics recommends 1 year of age. 74%of drownings happen in open water over the age of 5 (June 2023).We see benefits with bonding and trusting the water as early as 4 months. Each age and stage of development can bring a different aspect of swimming and water safety. Neural pathways are what we focus on for them to draw from in open water. It’s easier to create a new positive than overcome an negative pathway, so the earlier the better.

  • At various drowning prevention conferences, our founder, asked each family if and how they felt swim schools let them down. The answer was commonly, “If only I’d known…” Therefore we ask parents to be actively engaged in lessons. If we educate you, our hope is to create Water Safer families. We ask you to not instigate communication with your child during a lesson unless prompted by the instructor.

  • This is where we get you and your child out into actual dynamic water environments because we are ALL ABOUT applying that learning to realistic settings. Parent Commitment: 74% of drownings happen in open water over the age of 5 (June 2022). It’s still the second leading cause of accidental deaths in teen boys. We are committed to your child discovering a relationship with water utilizing skills they can apply to pool or open water for a lifetime. In turn, we require each parent to commit to the following:

  1. Prioritize lesson times and days in your schedule. This is the only “sport” you will enroll your child in that will save their life.

  2. Do not interfere with the process. We have a dynamic setting, utilizing methods inspired from aquatic therapy, swim coaching, open water sports all the way to aquatic energy work. Although our instructors may engage you during lessons and you are poolside, we require you do not engage them. This disrupts the momentum they have created. If you have a concern, please address it via email instructor@swim4lifecolorado.com or call 720-432-1656

  3. New patterns are tough: Our focus is on developing neural pathways which can be applied to doing what you love in open water as a family. When creating a new pattern of behavior, our tendency is to resist. Although 90% of our lessons are a blast, the other 10% is just as important. Children do not drown happy. For example, learning to self soothe and clear water from their nose or throat on their backs, supported encouragingly and then on their own, is lifesaving. No matter your skill level or age, panic equals drowning. You must allow us to press into tough places in order to create a new pathway for your child to be safer in water and avoid panic. We are anti-fear. Developing a “Transfer of Trust” from instructor to the child is a benchmark we hold dear and honor that relationship.

  4. It takes time: A life skill takes months to years to achieve. Each age and stage of development can bring a different aspect of swimming and water safety. Be ready to commit to more than a few months.

  5. Celebrate! When challenged or the unexpected occurs it is a great time to test the status of that new neural pathway. So even if its unintended, you’ll see us cheer the result. Please join us! If you exhibit panic, your child will develop fear. They read your cues. Likewise, talk positively about lessons with your child, highlighting what they can do and how far they have come. Set backs are normal, but once pressed into we find the sweet spot of progress and your child discovers their courage and control in water.
